When you work in an industry where only 5 out of 100 people make it through their first year, it's no surprise when one or two of them suddenly becomes "sick" and disappears. To be frank, you almost expect it sometimes. reps come and go as frequent as i take showers. every month or so you see a new batch coming in full of ambition, and the eagerness to strive for their own, to make their dreams come true. and weeks goes by, months, hundreds of contacts, countless miles driven, hours and hours spent, you see their fire slowing dying out. some hides it better than others, some you can see on their face, their attitude, work ethic, crocked tie, sloppy dress, alcohol stains. And you can always tell by their eyes. it's like you can actually see the fire diminishing, quite depressing actually... yet, strangely exciting at the same time.
This is a tribute to Mick Allen, the class of July 06'. First of all, Thanks for not telling me about it! seriously, i'm always the last to know in the loop. Dave didn't tell me anything either, it's like... um... i think he's here... maybe he's sick? .... next thing you know Ted's giving a speech. fuck. But congratz on the new job! don't know the details but it sounds like a good fit for your situation. it'd be nice to start having some dough in your pocket every now and then, maybe next time you can buy me drinks instead of stealing them. I'll miss having you in the office, more so as a drinking partner than a role play partner, 'cause you suck at role playing. seriously, gotta get those set-up's down. a warrior on the phone, monster at set apps, super-duper at getting refs, but you stink like sweaty-summer-feet when it comes to INW. really... Oh well, at least you're not as bad as MacDonald. oh MacDonald... what should we do with you. don't get me started.
You sir, are not like the others. you might not be the smartest of them all, or the most dedicated one out of the group, or even the best looking one (sorry, that one's pretty much a given. it's very hard when ppl are pared up against my good looks, it's just in the genes.), but one thing you got Allen, is that you got balls. yes you do. And a greek women once told me that "in this business, it's all about the balls, the one with the most balls wins." It's true. Almost every who leaves says that they can make it in this business, but it's just not what they wanted. i think that's bullshit. 95% of the ppl can't make it in the buz 'cause it's hard, but you sir, are that 5%. don't ever doubt yourself, 'cause i've been around long enough to know that you're going to be successful.
I'll miss all the great times, in office and out of office. fireside by hedgewood, giving stole booze to the poor, how you're always making sure everyone's buckled up, the hot wings at ringo's and the burning poop the morning after, taking the insurance test 3 times, crashing costco party, getting your nose broken and fucken laugh about it. damn it allen. you're the only true irish man i know... wish you all the best down in cali, make something of this business. we're not crazy when we signed up for it, you and me both know that this is where you belong. go down there and kick some ass, give them hell, you're Mike Allen bitch!
Don't worry about the team, we'll take good care of ourselves. everyone knows that i'm the boss of the gang anyways, we just let you tack along every once in awhile 'cause we think you're funny. keep in contact, just know that now when you're down there, you'll have to drink enough for the both of us. i'll give you a call from town square when i made it through level III.
to health,
Waykool, the last of class July 06'.
May the sun road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
May the rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May the Lord hold you in the palm of His hands.- old irish blessing.
